Lack of fund erodes professionalism in movie industry – Uchechukwu
Inadequate funding in the movie industry has left several professional roles being played by the production team to a handful of people. This has led to about forty percent of films produced in Nigeria to be substandard.
An upcoming film actor, Okorafor Uchechukwu, disclosed this in Umuahia, regretting that a situation where one person is shouldered with the responsibility of scripting, directing and producing of a movie cannot to be said to be a holistic approach to a well-made movie, anywhere in the world.
Funding is the real reason why most film companies use one person to script, direct, produce and edit a film, but it is not the same case elsewhere in the world, especially in Bollywood and Hollywood that we are aiming to surpass. The money is not really out there to run the cost of production of films.
Piracy has also worsened the issue as majority of the films we see in the market are pirated, meaning that the original producers and marketers do not share in the proceeds of such works. This is unfair as it doesn’t promote the industry”, he said.
Uchechukwu, who began acting when he joined his secondary school theater club a couple of years ago, however, gave kudos to Nollywood for the content of most of its films, which he said, are far better than the films from neighbouring Ghana, adding “most of the content of their films are not good enough for young minds”.
