Gov. Bello commends Obasanjo for establishing Open University

Kogi state governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, has commended the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo for its foresight in establishing the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).

Governor Bello made the commendation yesterday when he received the Director Lokoja Study Centre Professor Isa Abubakar Ochepa and senior members of staff of the institution on a courtesy call in his office.

He said the National Open University as a distant learning helped all cadres of Nigerians to acquire higher education without much stress, pointing out that alot of people who might have lost hope of gaining admissions into the conventional institutions of higher learning are now proud holders of first, and Masters degrees and even beyond.

While he praised the Open University for the impact it has exerted on its products, the governor urged the administrators of the institution to sustain improve on the gains as well as the legacies of the founders and pioneer lecturers and students.

Bello who also expressed satisfaction with the quality of the products of the University in his administration promised to also enroll for a doctorate.” The products of the institution in my administration have all been vibrant “the governor further noted.

While promising to look in to their request for an examination hall.the governor praised NOUN for being the only institution that has never gone on strike and therefore admonished them to use their wisdom to sensitise the people on the new agenda of his administration.

In his remark, leader of the delegation, Professor Isa Abubakar Ochepa, the Director Lokoja Study Centre told the governor that the centre which was established in 2006 has continued to grow in students’ population adding that it has been discharging its responsibilities diligently.

Prof. Ochepa disclosed that 90% of the students are from Kogi state and as a distant learning centre most of its students are civil servants undergoing degree programmes at the centre.
