Man bags 12 months imprisonment for stealing 15 mobile phones


A 22-year-old Man, Onifade Adegboyega, has been convicted and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment by a Modakeke Magistrate’s Court for stealing 15 mobile phones and other electronic items.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs Bose Awosan, ordered that the convict be locked in Ile-Ife prison, after he pleaded guilty to five-count charge of stealing.
Awosan said she hoped the punishment sentence would serve as deterrent to others intending to commite such crime.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt Ona Glory, told the court that the convict committed the offence between June 15 and Dec. 20, 2016 in eight locations within Modakeke, in Ife North-East LG of Osun.
Glory said that the convict, who specialises in stealing phones of unsuspecting residents of Modakeke, was arrested on one of his operation by residents and later handed over to the police.
He said police investigation revealed that the convict had stolen 15 smart mobile phones, all valued at N550,000, one Kenwood engines N7500, one ulver engine N6500, one stabiliser N4000 and the cash sum of N30,000 from twelve individuals.
He said the offence committed by the convict was contrary to section 383 (1) and punishable under section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol 11, Laws of Osun, 2003.
The convict who had no legal representation, pleaded guilty to the charges when read out to him but denied responsibility for stealing seven out of the 15 phones he was accused of stealing.
The Magistrate however convicted him on the charges he pleaded guilty to and sentenced him accordingly.
