The 2nd edition of the TYB Ladies Open Gold Championship has attracted about 400 golfers from Nigeria and other African countries.
Speaking to newsmen at the the tee off ceremony in Abuja over the weekend, the Lady captain of the TYB International Golf Resort & Country Club, Stg Maureen Apute said a total 400 golfers from Nigeria and beyond expected to jostle for laurels.
She said the championship holds key to the aspirations of many Nigerian female golfers, stressing that aside the opportunity to compete with some of the best players from across the country and beyond, the competition provides a veritable platform for the players to network and discuss how to help themselves in skills acquisition.
“The TYB Lady Open is starting properly tomorrow (today) with the ceremonial tee off and hoisting of flags.
“We are expecting 400 golfers both male and female from all the country and two other African countries – Uganda and Ghana .
“Generally, golf is a game of the mind and to play the game you need to be focused, your mindset and every need to be alert and calculative. “You don’t need distraction when you’re playing golf. So, the aim of this tournament is to bring ladies all over the country together to golf, network and discuss how to help ladies build themselves in skills acquisition, exercise and keep fit,” she said.
The life patron of the golf club and former chief of Army Staff, Tukur Yusuf Buratai noted that “The Golf club and the championship competition is now a global event attracting people from different parts of the world which is a signal that the managers of the golf club are working and deserve commendation,”
He added that Golf is an important sport that should not be neglected while pledging more support to ensure that the tournament is sustained and ensuring that more women participate.
Also speaking the wife of the chief of defense staff, Oghogho Musa said although it is her first time participating in the tournament, it is an experience she will want to try again
On the tournament, “She affirmed that golf is a unifier for the country while pledging support to bring more more young females into the competition,”
Also speaking, the captain of the TYB Golf Club, Maj Gen Samson Jiya said the Competition is in its second edition and will continue to improve annually to ensure that more participants key in to participate across the country
He also appreciated the life patron for his continued support to the Golf club while pledging to use Golf as a sport to Unite the country.
