2019 Elections: IPC organises 2-day workshop for northern journalists

International Press Centre (IPC) organised a two-day capacity building media workshop for political correspondents.

The workshop which drew about 40 journalists from the northern part of the country in an effort to equip them with relevant techniques to give good and balance reports on the forth coming 2019 general elections.

IPC in collaboration with EU-support to Democratic governance in Nigeria under its component 4b- support to media in making sure they give fair and good coverage to all political parties in 2019.

One of the resources persons, Prof Umaru Pate from the department of Mass communication, Bayero University, Kano talked extensively on conflicts sensitivity and avoiding hate speech as major imperatives in reporting elections ahead 2019.

He enjoined Journalists to shun all form of gratification or inducement that can tempt them to distort fact and figures during and after the 2019 elections.

According to him, journalists should develop themselves to a level that their report can be trusted by all Nigeria irrespective of where they are reporting from.

Guardian Newspaper where the respectively talked on: “Factoring development, social and human interest issues into election reporting in Nigeria and Legal and regulatory frameworks for reporting elections: The pitfalls to avoid.”
