About 200 unemployed youths in Cross River State benefited from Graduate Internship Service (GIS) training programme of the Federal ministry of finance.

The youth were trained in skills acquisition, orientation and employability training.

Director General of GIS, Dennis Chukwu, disclosed this, on Thursday, at the ongoing 3-day orientation and employability skills training for interns and firms representatives in Calabar.

He said having trained 41,000 graduates nationwide in the last four years when the scheme actually started, it has tremendously helped to reduce social tension in the country because apart from impacting new skills and knowledge the beneficiaries are paid stipend of N30,000 every month.

Represented by head of operations, Akubo Adegbe, the director general said GIS which is an off-shoot of SURE-P is more like a social protection program meant to take vulnerable young Nigerians out of the poverty line with impartation of special skills and orientation. He said with the orientation and skills beneficiaries can set up their own businesses with good support having created desired manpower and capability.

“GIS is meant to bridge the gap between school and workplace. As a national program, it is otherwise a social protection program for young graduates where they are helped to optimise their skills. So far we have trained 41,000 graduates nationwide and with additional stipend of N30,000 we give each of them we have not only reduced social tension but heavily boosted national economy “, he explained.

The trainees who enlisted in the scheme, applauded the scheme as it has helped them adapt to fields which were not originally their areas of professional competence appealed to government should pay them outstanding two months stipend.
