2 phone thieves bag 12 months in jail

A Tinubu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State on Wednesday sentenced  two men to 12 months’ imprisonment each   for waylaying a man, beating him up and collecting his  phone worth  N40,000.

The Magistrate, Mr T. A. Anjorin-Ajose, convicted and sentenced Biodun Oladimeji, 22, and Kamorudeen Babatunde, 30, whose  addresses and occupations were not provided.

They had pleaded guilty to a three-count charge of conspiracy, theft and assault. Anjorin-Ajose held that the duo should spend the next 12 months in the Ikoyi Custodial Centre, Lagos State.

The prosecutor, Insp. Ajaga Agboko, earlier  told the court that the duo committed the offences on Jan. 26, at 12.45a.m. at Ajah Ilaje, Lagos.He said that they waylaid one Mr Jeremiah Paul on his way from work and  punched his ribs, causing him internal injuries.Agboko added that they collected Paul’s Infinix Smart 3 worth   N40,000.

He said that the offences contravene Sections 174, 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 174 stipulates three years’  jail term for assault, while Section 287 provides for three years’ imprisonment for theft and Section 411 prescribes two years’ imprisonment for conspiracy.
