UNIOSUN begins investigation over students killed by police

The Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Prof. Labode Popoola, has said that
investigation into the circumstances that led to the death of two students of the university has commenced.
The VC in a statement explained that the university management acted swiftly to rescue the situation.
He said, “The management of Osun State University would like to inform parents, guardians and all stakeholders that, in truth, some policemen, yesterday, shot and wounded two of our students for yet unclear reasons.
“We acted swiftly, by evaluating the victims to safety. They are now receiving the best available care. The Vice-Chancellor was by their bedside as early as 6.30am today (Sunday), and thank God they are doing well.
“We like to implore all to keep the peace as management and the security agencies are on top of the situation.
“We wish to state clearly also that relevant authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident and justice will be done.”
Recall that there was pandemonium in Oke-Baale area of Osogbo Local Government of the state as students of the Osun state University took over the streets to protest a crack down on some of their colleagues by some unknown policemen in the state on Saturday.
It was gathered some policemen came in unmarked vehicles to our residence at Oke-Baale when some students were playing football and suddenly started shooting at the students.
Two students were hit by the bullet. The two victims involved were identified as Adesola Kazeem a 300L student of the department of Physics with Electronic and Ajao Ibrahim,400L student in the same department.
Scores of the students were observed burning tyres on the major road,chanting no to stop except the commissioner of police do something about it.
It was also gathered that it has degenerated into a mass riot that has now boxed Olaiya Oke Baale and Jaleiyemi
Motorist were said to have abandoned their vehicles following the presence of a large number of irate students armed with planks and other weapons.
Some students of Our Lady and Saint Francis Catholic College, who went for escursion were also seen running for their safety and had to go home through Ilesha garage.
The Osun state commissioner of Police in the state,Mr Fimihan Adeoye confirmed the incident saying the investigation as commenced.
He said the essence of investigation was to establish and to identified that such an act was committed then to know the people involved so that the law can take it normal cause.
Adeoye said “two students were injured in the incident and are been attended to now at the Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital,Osogbo and that’s why am here so as to ensure that the victim’s were treated.
“I can not confirmed that the injury was as a result of gun shot,but have not seen them and it was only the expert that can confirmed that”.
