FCT councils’ polls: INEC decries low PVC collection

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Tuesday, disclosed that only 646, 883 out of 1, 020, 799 registered voters have collected their Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) for next Saturday’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections.
The FCT Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Professor Jacob Jatau made the disclosure at the stakeholders’ meeting held in Abuja.
Jatau stated the commission was not comfortable with the number of PVCs still in its possession.
According to him, “The Commission is not comfortable with the number of those who have collected their PVCs despite the publicity and voter education outreaches.
“We want to appeal to the good people of the Federal Capital Territory to use the remaining two days to go to INEC’s offices in the six Area Councils to collect their PVCs from 8am to 4pm,” he said.
Jatau pointed out that only those who have collected their PVCs will be allowed to vote during the elections.
The REC disclosed that the elections will be conducted in 562 polling units, 2,207 voting points.
Also speaking at the meeting, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase warned potential trouble makers to keep off from the territory.
Arase, who was represented by the FCT Commissioner of Police, Wilson Inalegwu assured that adequate security arrangements have been put in place to ensure peaceful and credible elections.
