Yaya Toure deserves a statue too- Fans react to proposed David Silva statue

Fans of the English Premier League, especially those of African extraction have taken to social media to express their demur at Manchester City’s plan to build a statue for departing David Silva outside the Etihad Stadium.

The fans raised questions over why Yaya Toure did not get one after his exit.

Silva has called time on his 10-year stay at Manchester City this summer and the club also disclosed that a training pitch with bespoke mosaic will be dedicated to the 34-year-old at the City Football Academy.

During his time with the Citizens, the little Sparniard won four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and five League Cups while Toure, who left in 2018, won three Premier League trophies, one FA Cup and two League Cups.

In the wake of City’s announcement on Monday, some fans believe the Ivorian midfielder deserves a similar treatment as a reward for his performances for the club.

Meanwhile, Silva and Vincent Kompany’s statues will be unveiled in 2021.

City’s announcement sparks fresh calls against racism within English football, a subject matter which has been keenly argued in recent memory. Only a few months ago, Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling openly averred that Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard are managing top clubs because they are white. He cited the case of Sol Campbell, a former English International who enjoyed similar success during his playing days but has been relegated to managing third tier teams during his managerial career.
