Woman, 43, arraigned over alleged sale of unregistered cream, soap

A 43-year-old woman, Aminat Akande, on Tuesday appeared before a Federal High Court
in Lagos, charged with distributing and selling unregistered cream and soaps.
Akande, who resides at No. 1, NTA St., Topa, Badagry, Lagos State, is standing trial on a three-count charge of importation, distribution and sale of unwholesome products.
She is being prosecuted by the National Agency For Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
Akande, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Prosecutor, Mr Umar Shamaki, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Nov. 23, 2016 at Shop DO22,
Ogun Plaza, Trade Fair Complex, Lagos.
Shamaki said the accused imported cosmetics including Paris Fair and White Soap and Cream — Neutrotone Cream, White Moon
and Nature Secret — without due registration.
According to him, the accused also engaged in an unlawful sale and distribution of the products knowing full well that they were unregistered.
He said the sale of the unregistered products was unwholesome and punishable under the law.
The offences contravened Sections 1(1) and 6 (1) of the Food, Drugs and Related Products (Registration) Act, Laws of the
Federation, 2004.
Justice Ibrahim Buba granted the accused bail in the sum of N1 million with one surety in like sum.
Buba said the surety must own a landed property within the court’s jurisdiction and adjourned the case until
Oct. 4 for trial.
