Why FG plans to decentralize NCAT, Zaria- Keyamo

The Federal Government of Nigeria has embarked on a initiative to decentralize the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT) in Zaria. This decision, announced by President Bola Tinubu, involves splitting the college into six campuses across the country’s geopolitical zones.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo says, the initiative aims to enhance efficiency, ensure national coverage, and facilitate smooth operations of the college
The decentralization plan includes establishing campuses in Akure (Southwest), Osubi (South-South), Ebonyi (Southeast), Ilorin (North Central), Yola (Northeast), and retaining Zaria as the flagship campus in the Northwest. “This strategic move is expected to reduce logistical and financial barriers for students who previously had to travel long distances to Zaria”
Industry stakeholders have lauded this initiative as a game-changer for Nigeria’s aviation sector. By expanding access to world-class training, the government aims to foster regional development and create a broader talent pool. The localized campuses will offer tailored training opportunities, addressing region-specific aviation needs such as oil and gas logistics in the South-South and agricultural aviation in the North-East.

“The decentralization of NCAT is seen as a positive step towards enhancing aviation training and accessibility in Nigeria. However, challenges remain in ensuring that all campuses are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and qualified staff. With careful planning, this move could elevate Nigeria’s aviation standards to meet international benchmarks
