Ughelli mobile court convicts 12 over violation of restriction order

Following their disobedience to the Delta state government’s lockdown order, 12 persons were on Monday convicted by the mobile court set up in Ughelli North Local Government Area of the state.

With 19 persons brought before the presiding Magistrate, Edward Adjugo for prosecution for violating the stay -at -home order, 12 persons were sentenced with an option of fine while seven others were acquitted by the court.
The state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Peter Mrakpor, who spoke to journalists said: “We are enforcing the order of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa in our own way through the law.
“And the enforcement of the law and order has various aspects and the first aspect is the police arresting violators of offences provided by the law and move to the stage of prosecution.
“If you arrest anybody without prosecution, it amounts to breach of the right of the people and that is why we are here to prosecute the offenders of the lockdown rules issued by the governor of Delta state.
“This is a mobile court in Ughelli assigned specially to deal with this type of matters and right now we have 19 persons brought before the court and an average of them was discharged and some were found guilty.
“Those found and pleaded guilty were sentenced accordingly, and fines were imposed instead of sending them to prison. But, if they cannot pay the fines, they would have no option than to serve their various prison terms.
