Two killed in Ebonyi/C’ River boundary dispute
No fewer than two persons have been killed and property worth millions of naira destroyed in a boundary dispute between the people of Ochenyim village, Amagu community in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State and Adadama community, Abi Local Government Area in Cross River State.
The victims, who were from Ochenyim village, are Okechukwu John Ogwa (28) and Mrs. Nweke Nwankwo. Policemen, who were on duty in the disputed land were reportedly attacked by armed men.
The village head, Chief Peter Azuegu, said that Nwankwo had gone to harvest cassava in a farm near the disputed boundary when she was killed in an ambush.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. George Okafor confirmed the incident.
“The matter was reported to the police that one Nweke Nwankwo, who had left her house at about 9 a.m. to harvest cassava, did not come back and nobody could trace her whereabouts,” he said.
He noted that immediately the matter was reported to the police, a team of policemen were mobilised to the disputed area but that immediately the policemen arrived, the hoodlums opened fire on them.
“They were even using real bullet not even cartridges. They actually wanted to kill our men but God being on our side, no policeman was killed”, Okafor said.
He warned the people of the area to avoid the disputed land, even as he pleaded with them not to take laws into their own hands.
