Three persons feared killed as Melaye escapes death at anti-recall rally

No fewer than three persons were feared killed on Monday during an anti-recall rally of Senator Dino Melaye which held at Kogi State Polytechnic Lokoja.

This is even as the Melaye, who is the lawmaker representing Kogi West senatorial district of Kogi State in the Senate, narrowly escaped death during the rally.

The Senator, who arrived the venue of the rally, addressed the students of Kogi State Polytechnic on their plight and that of the people of the state under the leadership of Governor Yahaya Bello.

As the rally was coming to an end, a group of assailants wielding assorted guns and other dangerous weapons suddenly surfaced at the venue, shooting sporadically killing and injuring scores of people.

Among the injured were two operatives of the DSS who were on Melaye’s escort. Some of the injured are already receiving treatment at the DSS Clinic Lokoja.

Meanwhile, the anti-recall rallies scheduled to hold in all the electoral wards within Lokoja metropolis by Melaye have been put on hold till further notice in view of the security situation.

Several vehicles were set ablaze while markets and motor parks were deserted as traders, passengers and transporters ran for their dear lives.

Senator Melaye was on tour of his constituency holding rallies to mobolise the constituents against the ongoing process that could lead to his recall from the Senate. He was in Kabba/Bunu, Mopa/Muro, Yagba East and Yagba West local government areas on Sunday.

The tour of Monday was to end at KotonKarfe.
