The sudden death of Aminu Mustapha, the acting Divisional Police Officer (DPO), of Yaba Divisional Police Station in Ondo state on Monday has sparked off controversy.
Mr. Mustapha, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), was reported dead last weekend by his family members. His death was said to have scared some police officers in the divisional police station in Ondo town who argued that he died “spiritually.”
These claims have created tension and mixed feelings among police officers and the authority in the Ondo State Police Command.
The Daily Times reported that while the officers claimed that Mr. Mustapha died in mysterious circumstances, the police authority said he died due to an auto accident.
The late Deputy Superintendent of Police was transferred from Irele to Yaba Divisional Police Station last weekend.
Police sources hinted that Mr. Mustapha had been facing administrative problems since his new posting to Yaba Divisional Police Station in Ondo town.
One of the sources who had pleaded not to be named claimed that a fetish object was last week found in the front office of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO).
He said that the fetish object suspected to be “sacrifice” spurred the officers to embark on an emergency prayer within the vicinity of the police station.
The source added that the officers had to prayed against any misfortune among the rank and file officers of the station to avoid mishap and tragedy.
Unfortunately, according to the source, the DPO who was hale and healthy was announced dead in his sleep at Irele last weekend.
“The family announced his mysterious death on Saturday saying that he (DPO) died in his sleep while on bed,” he added.
Spokesman of the Ondo State Police Command, Femi Joseph, however, denied the mysterious death of the acting DPO.
He told the Daily Times that the late Mustapha died in a car crash along Omifon axis while journeying to Irele.
He said the report about the mysterious death of the senior police officer which claimed he died in his sleep was untrue.
