Shiites, security operatives clash in Katsina, 10 dead

More than 10 members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) lost their lives in Funtua, Katsina State following cash with security personnel.

The clash occurred, on Wednesday, morning along the Funtua-Zaria road when the Shi’ites were reportedly conducting a religious procession.

The procession, known as Day of ‘Ashura, is normally conducted worldwide on the 10th of Muharram, according to Islamic calendar, by members of the sect.

Before Wednesday’s incident, however, police had given orders that such processions should not hold in the state, including in neighbouring Kano and Kaduna states.

Eyewitnesses said the IMN members gathered and had commenced their procession when they were accosted by a batch of police and military men who ordered them to disperse.
