Sallah gift: Gov Ganduje frees 170 prisoners in Kano

Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of on Tuesday ordered the release of 170 prison inmates from the Goron Dutse Prison in the exercise of his prerogative of mercy as the executive governor of the state.

Ganduje who deemed the gesture necessary, said it is done in the spirit of the season so as to put a smile on the faces of such inmates, their families as well as friends and loved ones.

According to the governor, the state government is committed to the welfare of inmates in the state and would continue to compliment the effort of the Federal Government to decongest prisons across the country.

Ganduje also urged the 170 inmates who were pardoned to make good use of their new freedom and be useful to themselves and the society at large.

“ President Muhammadu Buhari has directed all governors in the country to do everything possible to decongest the prisons.

“What we have done today is in compliance to the directive of the president. We care about you and your welfare

“There is no better time to show you how much we care about you than this day, on this Sallah day. We want you to become good citizens as you go back into the society.

“You must shun crimes and discourage others from it. We hope you would become better persons contributing to the development of the state positively”

Ganduje, after announcing the release of the 170 prison inmates gave each of them N5,000 as transport fee back to their various homes.

The inmates, who were full of joy, thanked the governor for the unexpected freedom, promising to be of good behaviour and true ambassadors of their families and community henceforth.

The 170 freed inmates brought to a total of 2000 inmates, Governor Ganduje’s administration has set free since 2015 when the administration came into power
