A socio- cultural group, Gongola Peoples’ Forum (GPF) expressed confidence that reversion of the name of Adamawa State to the old Gongola State is imminent.

At the weekend, chairpersons of various socio-cultural organizations within the Gongola region met at the weekend to
foster collaboration, align objectives, and create policies aimed at enhancing the socio-cultural landscape of the region.

Addressing the attendees, Engr. Markus Natina Gundiri, Chairman of the GPF, emphasized the importance of unity among the diverse ethnic nationalities that make up the Gongola region.

“The GPF stands as the umbrella organization for all socio-cultural groups in our state, and today marks a significant step toward fostering dialogue and understanding,” he noted.

The forum’s primary aim, according to Engr. Gundiri, is to engage participants in meaningful discussions on the goals of the GPF and its member organizations.

“Together, we will develop actionable policies and programs that will enhance our collective efforts,” he stated.

Engr. Gundiri took the opportunity to commend the Adamawa State government, under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, for making significant strides in granting autonomy and self-determination to various ethnic groups. He described these developments as revolutionary, aligning perfectly with the core objectives of the GPF.

In a gesture of respect and recognition, the chairman extended warm congratulations to the seven newly appointed chiefs and emirs of the region.

He urged these traditional leaders to uphold the principles of justice, equity, and fairness in their governance, thereby dispelling any skepticism regarding the recent appointments. “Let us set high standards that will silence the critics who have prophesied doom over this noble initiative,” he urged.

Engr. Gundiri also called upon the citizens of Gongola to support and collaborate with the traditional rulers in promoting progress and peaceful coexistence at the grassroots level.

“Our collective commitment is essential for fostering positive change in our communities,” he emphasized.

Addressing the importance of safeguarding the region’s newfound autonomy, the chairman reminded attendees of the age-old adage that “the price of liberty is eternal vigilance.”

He urged the people to remain politically conscious and proactive in exercising their civic rights, ensuring they elect leaders who are accountable and committed to their welfare.

“Our dedication to justice, fair play, and peaceful coexistence is unwavering,” Engr. Gundiri asserted, inviting all men and women of goodwill from diverse backgrounds and ethnicities to join the GPF in building a society where, as echoed in the National Anthem, “no man is oppressed.”

In a bold move to reinforce regional identity, Engr. Gundiri announced the GPF’s campaign for the reversion of the state’s name back to “Gongola State.”

He highlighted the historical significance of the name, which was the designation of the state upon its creation on February 3, 1976, before being renamed Adamawa State in 1991. “This campaign aims to restore a sense of pride and unity among our people,” he stated.

As the forum commenced, Engr. Gundiri concluded his address by welcoming the leaders of socio-cultural organizations to the event, wishing them fruitful deliberations as they embark on this collaborative journey toward a brighter future for the Gongola Region.

The gathering marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing efforts to unify the diverse ethnic groups within the Gongola Region, reinforcing the GPF’s commitment to collaboration, progress, and cultural preservation.

With the support of traditional rulers and community leaders, the GPF aims to create a thriving environment that honors the rich cultural heritage of the Gongola people.
