Provost lauds LASG on inclusion of tertiary institutions in tree planting

Provost of Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (AOCOED), Otto, Ijanikin, Lagos, Dr. Ladele Aina, has lauded the Lagos State government for engaging tertiary institutions in the state in tree planting exercise.

The Provost said this during the 10th annual Tree Planting Day titled, ‘Think Green, Plant Green and Live Green’ held at the College recently where she noted that findings from researches across the globe has validated the reality of the danger of excessive heat which has claimed thousands of life in some countries.

According to her, heat wave is a correlate of global warming which the globe is currently contending with, adding that in the past series of efforts had been made to save the world from the catastrophe that is looming following continuous depletion of the ozone layer.

“As the world concentrates on global warming and its adverse effects on aquatics and terrestrials, it is imperative that the public be more enlightened on efficacy of trees which are critical in the fight against global warming”, she said.

In his address, Governor Akinwumi Ambode said it has been a decade of sustained commitment to the yearly exercise which has earned the state national and global recognition as a total of 6.8 million trees have been planted state wide.

“We must remember that trees are essential to human existence as they provide food, shelter, remedy for ill health, source of energy and also help to control storm, noise pollution and prevent desert encroachment”, he said.

The Governor said that if people must continue to live in good health, planting of trees would not only be an option but a strategy that must be embraced by all as he warned against massive deforestation in the name of site clearance for housing and infrastructural development.
