Peter Obi will return to PDP, run for President in 2027, says Ali Modu Sheriff

Ali Modu Sheriff, former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), says Peter Obi will be the party’s presidential candidate in 2027.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, the former governor of Borno State said he is convinced that Obi and the PDP are “a perfect match”.

Obi, who was PDP’s vice-presidential candidate in 2019, left the party just days before the 2022 presidential primaries. He went on to contest under the Labour Party (LP), finishing third in the 2023 presidential election.

Despite this, Modu Sheriff believes Obi will return to the PDP, especially now that the party has zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the south.

“The information available to me is that at any moment from now Peter Obi will go back to PDP and run as a presidential candidate under PDP,” Sheriff said.

He added that Obi is only taking his time before making a formal return, insisting that the newly formed coalition party, African Democratic Congress (ADC), will not last.

“As far as this politics is concerned, ADC doesn’t exist. Give the party three months and it will die down,” he said.

Sheriff also backed the recent comments by Jerry Gana, a founding member of the PDP, who on July 25 said efforts were ongoing to bring Obi back into the fold.

Obi, he argued, stands a stronger chance of winning the 2027 election if he returns to the PDP.
