Peruvian opposition leader Fujimori released after three months

Peru’s right-wing opposition leader Keiko Fujimori was on Monday released from prison after three months in custody, local media reported.

A court had ordered Fujimori’s release on the condition that she report to the authorities once a month, pay bail of 70,000 soles (20,000 dollars) and not leave her residence.

The opposition leader is also not allowed to contact witnesses or co-defendants, the court said on Thursday.

Fujimori’s brother Hiro Fujimori was waiting for her, and she waved before getting into a car, according to daily El Comercio.

Fujimori had tweeted that as soon as she got home, she would get tested for Covid-19 and wait for the result before getting together with her daughters.

The powerful opposition leader, who is the daughter of former authoritarian president Alberto Fujimori, is being investigated for money-laundering and obstructing the course of justice.

The proof submitted by the public prosecutor was insufficient to justify further detention, the judges decided.

Fujimori already spent more than a year in custody up until last November.

The politician is alleged to have headed a criminal network to launder illicit funds that the corruption-tarnished Brazilian construction company Odebrecht contributed to her 2011 presidential election campaign. (dpa)
