Onu to deliver Ghana’s 56th Republic Day lecture

Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, will deliver this year’s “Republic Day” Lecture of Ghana as one of the key activities of events marking the country’s 56th Anniversary as an independent nation.

Ghana gained independence from her colonial master Britain on March 6, 1957 and became a Republic on March 1, 1960.

The West African neighbours invited Dr. Onu through her Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Mhaha Ayaringa to the lecture scheduled to hold on Thursday, June 30 in Accra, the country’s capital.

The lecture with the theme “Technology, the key to African Development” would get to climax with a state lunch in honour of Ghanaian senior citizens on Friday, July 1 in which Dr. Onu is also expected to attend.

Dr. Onu, it would be recalled, has since assumption of office as the Minister of Science and Technology, emphasised that Africa has largely remained under-developed because of failure by past and present leaders to properly see and embrace science and technology as the key to national development.

He has also repeatedly argued at different occasions that “no nation, whether in ancient or modern times has ever developed without science and technology and until this is appreciated, Africa will remain under-developed.”
