One feared dead as Police clash with El-Zakzaky followers in Abuja
On Tuesday, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command dispersed protesting members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) in Maitama, Abuja, and one person, Muhsin Abdallah, is believed to have been killed.
The FCT police command, on the other hand, remained quiet about the incident, amid the sect’s allegations that the deceased was killed by stray bullets fired by police operatives, and that several others were wounded.
According to Ibrahim Musa, the IMN’s spokesperson, “the police shot at the Shi’ites procession, killing Muhsin Abdallah and injuring dozens of others.”
When the incident occurred, members of the IMN were demanding the release of their detained leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, and his companion.
After a violent protest in Abuja’s Maitama neighborhood, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command said it dispersed a procession by members of the proscribed IMN.
According to the police, some members of the IMN went on a rampage, damaging public property and targeting innocent people, including police officers, with stones and other dangerous objects, according to a statement signed by the command spokesperson, Mariam Yusuf.
“Unfortunately, the members of the disbanded sect went on a rampage destroying public property and attacking innocent citizens including Police Officers with stones and other dangerous objects.
“In view of the above, the Command wishes to state that it will not condone any form of attack on its personnel, equipment or other public property,” the statement read in part.
