Ex-Ohaneze chieftain chides Northern delegates over comments on Confab

Former chairman of Anambra State chapter of apex Igbo socio-Cultural organisation, Ohaneze Ndigbo, Elder Chris Eluemuno, has flayed the statement issued by the Northern delegates to the last National constitutional conference describing it “as sabotage and reckless”.

A member of the conference and former chairman of the states chapter of the South East Ohaneze Ndigbo in his reaction to the statement said, the statement by some Northern delegates disassociating themselves from the conference report was “an affront and attempt to forestall a follow- up meeting of the conference delegates billed for may next month.”

Elder Eluemunoh described the statement as coming from “some irresponsible delegates from the North and queried the rationale for the kangaroo meeting where they dissociated themselves from the CONFAB report which was taken three years ago.”

He pointed out that the decision was unanimous saying “there was no discordant opinion by all delegates excerpt on the 13 percent oil derivation by the Niger Delta.”

According to him the statement was an embarrassment to Northern Elders who have genuine interest in the peace and unity of Nigeria even as he maintained that Nigeria will know no peace until the Confab report is signed into law.

“We are hell bent on the Confab report and the Federal Government must look at it. It is the only salvation to the nation’s problem and unless it is implemented, the country will continue to witness endless crisis,” Eluemunoh said.

However, he said if President Muhammed Buhari fails to implement the report, another coming president will implement it, because he is not going to perpetrate himself as the life president of this country.”

Also reacting to a statement credited to the British Ambassador to Nigeria claiming that the British Government will not allow any part of Nigeria to break out if it wishes to do so, Elumunoh said the British Ambassador was speaking for himself on Biafra agitation.

“Nigeria is an amalgamated nation and nobody can stop any part of this country which wishes to go not to go, as a lawyer I do know that the United Nation Charter allows any part of a country that wants to go to do so if they show good reasons why they should leave. The Southern Sudan recently had their own and so many others. Why should Biafra be different,” Elder Eluemunoh queried.

He cautioned envoys to Nigeria to be mindful of their statements especially as it affect the component regions of their accredited country in order not to heat up the polity.
