NLC orders state branches to prepare for nationwide strike if…

Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has ordered its state branches to prepare to embark on strike action should the Federal Government fail to agree with the organised labour on issues of Consequential Adjustment of Salaries before the expiration of the October 16 deadline.
This was contained in a letter signed by the NLC Secretary General, Comrade Emma Ogboaja and addressed to all state branches.

“You will recall that a joint communique was issued by the leadership of NLC, TUC and JPSNC stating that after two weeks from date of the said communique industrial harmony could not be guaranteed in the country should an agreement not be reached with the Federal Government on the Consequential Adjustment of Salaries as a result of the New National Minimum Wage of N30,000.
“You are hereby directed to coordinate preparations with TUC and JPSNC in your state for necessary industrial action should the time expire without an agreement as contained in the communique,” the NLC said.
The letter reads:“Last week, the Organised Labour during a meeting with the Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige, had agreed to meet on October 15, to wrap up all discussions concerning the issue of Consequential Adjustment.

“The ultimatum was as a result of the nonchalant attitude of the government negotiating side of the consequential adjustment committee which was mandated to work out a template for the adjustment of salaries of public service employees.
“Whereas the Federal Government is offering 11 per cent upward review of salary for officers on grade level 07 to 14 and 6.5 per cent increase for workers of grade level 15 to 17, the Organised Labour is demanding for 29 per cent and 24 per cent respectively.
The Daily Times reports that the organised labour had been at loggerheads with the Federal Government on issues implementation since President Muhammadu signed the N30,000 National Minimum Wage into law on April 18.
