Nigeria needs mental restructuring, not fiscal – NGP Chairman

With the ongoing clamours for restructuring of the Nigerian state by different groups in the country, the national chairman of New Generation Party (NGP), Mr Yakubu Shendam has said that Nigeria does not need fiscal restructure as being agitated.
Shendam said that what the country needs at this critical point in time was not fiscal restructuring but a mental restructuring at would change the orientation of the people for the better especially the youths.
He said that when the citizens thing positive about their country they would be patriotic and hold one believe for a better nation where everyone would work for its growth.
Shendam said that for the country to move forward and yield the needed developmental structures in line with the yearnings of the people, the mindset of the people must be completely reformed.
According to the National chairman, Nigeria is already blessed with lots of mineral and human resources but corruption, greed, religious bigotry and ethnic division have been the major factors militating against the development of the country.
He said: “We are of the opinion that the problem of Nigeria might not be restructuring. We believe in equity and as a former national delegate to the National Conference of Nigeria in 2014, we deliberated on the subject of restructuring Nigeria, comprising of various groups, religion, ethnic groups civil societies, and other political stakeholders of various interests.
“Those of us who represented the youths, particularly myself, had our own views, and we believed what Nigeria actually needed, even if equity is key, it’s more of mental restructuring.
“If Nigeria is divided into segment and you didn’t develop the mentality of Nigerians, restructuring will become a generational statement.
“We in the New Generation Party (NGP) are of the opinion that what we, need in Nigeria is mental restructuring because; when you talk about restructuring of Nigeria, which means, people should be given fair share of resources and treated equall. But you will end up restructuring peoples’ pocket.
“Some persons have come with the slogan of “restructuring”, even when we have not accepted that we are an indivisible nation. Nigeria to me is just a geographical location. We don’t have a national identity that is why you see people calling for secession, declaring that some ethnic group should leave a particular zone.”
Shendam emphasized that until Nigerians come together and unite as citizens of an indivisible nation, the country cannot achieve its dream of becoming one of the top developed economies in the world.
According to him, “the New Generation Party is offering that solution and that is why the party came onboard. We are tired of continuous listening to our so called leaders with their divisive stories.”
