Man docked for allegedly obtaining N8.5m under false pretence

Segun Lawal,a 44 year old man, who allegedly defrauded one Basil Udegbulem of N8.5 million on the pretext of purchasing a building for him, was on Tuesday docked before Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
Lawal, of no fixed address, is facing a four-count charge of conspiracy, stealing, obtaining under false pretences and fraud.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused and one other still at large committed the offences at Orile Iganmu area of Lagos State sometime in 2014.
Osayande said that the accused fraudulently obtained N8.5 million from the complainant, Basil Udegbulem, under the pretext that he would help him to purchase a building at No. 107, Sari Iganmu Road, Lagos.
She said that the offences contravened Sections 285, 312, 323 and 409 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.
The chief magistrate, Mrs. Ipaye Nwachukwu, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Nwachukwu ordered that the sureties should be gainfully employed and be residing within the court’s jurisdiction as well as provide evidence of tax payments with their addresses verified.
the court adjourned the case till Dec. 20 for mention.
