Magu probe: Malami denies inducing witness to testify against Magu

Magu: Panel resolves to stop picking EFCC chairman from Police

Attorney-general of the federation, Abubakar Malami has dismissed claims by the suspended Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) chairman, Ibrahim Magu, that he had manufactured false witnesses to testify against Magu during his probe for alleged crimes of financial corruption.

The minister of justice said this in a statement signed by his media aide, Umar Jibrilu Gwandu.

“The Honourable Attorney-General never met Giwa and has never discussed any issue with the so-called Donald Wokoma nor asked anybody, personally or by proxy, to engage the so-called Victor to testify against Magu”

Recall that the suspended EFCC Chairman has been in the spotlight following his arrest by the Department of State Services (DSS) for multiple counts of financial malfeasance.

Following his arrest, President Muhammadu Buhari had set up a 7-man committee led by the attorney-general of the federation, Abubakar Malami to investigate and press to the discovery of Magu’s alleged financial fraud.

Malami accused the suspended EFCC chairman of insubordination and using his office for gross misconduct. The panel submitted that the president ousts Magu from office permanently, on the basis of the outcome of the investigation.

While the Malami led panel investigated Magu, a lawyer by the name Victor Giwa accused Malami of manufacturing witnesses to speak against the suspended EFCC chairman during the investigation.

However, Malami has categorically denied getting false witnesses to testify against the suspended chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu.

“The Honourable Attorney-General never met Giwa and has never discussed any issue with the so-called Donald Wokoma nor asked anybody, personally or by proxy, to engage the so-called Victor to testify against Magu.”

Giwa in a statement alleged that both Malami and Wokoma had already tried to recruit him to nail Magu to the wall.

Malami described the statement as “a flimsy allegation” for allegedly refusing to testify against Ibrahim Magu.

“The claim by Victor Giwa Esq is therefore fictitious unfounded and figment of imagination of mischief makers who want to create unnecessary attention and tarnish the good image of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice and labouring incessantly these days, to falsely cast aspersion on the AGF’s hard-earned reputation” Malami said in a statement.
