Lions Club brings hunger relief to Ikeja, touching hundreds of lives

BY MOTOLANI OSENI

In a season marked by festivity and reflection, the Lions Club, led by Lion Tolulope Senbajo, District Governor for District 404B2, has launched a major initiative to tackle hunger in the Ikeja community, Lagos Satiate.

The project said to be part of the Lions Foundation’s broader efforts, aims to provide food relief to those facing food insecurity during this festive period.

Speaking at the event, Senbajo emphasized the importance of addressing hunger, one of Lions Club’s key global causes.

“As we enter the festival season, we are reminded that hunger persists in our communities. At Lions Club, we take every opportunity to relieve suffering, and this December, we focus on bringing food support to the people of Ikeja who access to the essential items may not have they need,” Senbajo stated.

The initiative is being rolled out in two phases. The first phase, held in Ikeja, Lagos, aims to reach 500 beneficiaries, with plans for a similar distribution in Ilorin, Kwara State, in February 2025. The food packages include rice, garri, bread, spaghetti, and sachet tomatoes, which are vital staples for many families in the region.

Senbajo explained that while 500 families will directly benefit from this distribution, the impact is much wider, with each family likely supporting several others in their household.

“This project is not just about the food; it’s about hope and community. A mother receiving a bag of relief materials is not just alleviating hunger in her own home but extending care to her loved ones. It’s a small but meaningful gesture in a time of great need,” Senbajo said.

Lions Club’s annual hunger relief efforts are part of its broader mandate to address eight global causes, including vision care, diabetes screening, pediatric cancer, youth empowerment, disaster relief, and humanitarian efforts. These projects are spread throughout the year across Nigeria’s six districts: Lagos, Oyo, Kwara, Ekiti, and Osun states.

In his remarks, Senbajo also urged Lions Club members to continue their vital work, even in times of hardship. “No matter the challenges, we must remain committed to our communities. Whether it’s hunger or adversity, we should always strive to be good citizens and to serve others with the resources we have,” he added.

The event also featured a wellness and nutrition lecture to help educate community members on how to make the most of their available food and stay healthy during the festive season.

Representing the Ikeja Local Government, Lion Anita Rasaq, who spoke on behalf of Chairman Mojeed Alabi Balogun, expressed deep gratitude to the Lions Club for their ongoing support. “We appreciate the Lions Club for their generosity and for remembering the people of Ikeja during this crucial time,” Rasaq said.
