LASU VC tasks youths on governance

Vice Chancellor of the Lagos State University(LASU), Prof Lanre Fagbohun has tasked students not to underrate themselves but see themselves as being relevant in the scheme of governance of the nation.

Fagbohun said this while addressing students who participated at the just concluded inter-varsity debate organised by LASU Students’ Union (LASUSU) which took place at the Main Auditorium among students from University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Oyo State and LASU.

The debate which had its theme as : ‘Charting Sustainable Development in Nigeria: the Youth Agenda’ focused on the Not Too Young To Run Bill.

According to him, it is high time students get involved in the governance of the nation and not only engaged themselves in campus crisis stressing that Nigeria is where it is today because youths have not appreciated their roles.

“I don’t want you to see this debate in the context of competition alone but as a ground where you use your intellect as part of the excellence that will move this nation forward”, he said.

Acting Dean Students Affairs, Dr Femi Obayori said it is important for the students not to see the debate as just an opportunity to exchange ideas but as a forum to come up with reality as young people in a country that is in dire need of change.

“It’s not just a competition but an event that should be able to chart the way forward for us in a quest for a better country, the debate should form part of national discourse”, he said.

At the end of the three-day debate, University of Ibadan came first followed by Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) and Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) came third.
