LASPARK evacuates uprooted trees, prunes trees within Lagos

The Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) on Monday said that the Agency had been removing trees uprooted by the last rain storm some parts of Lagos.
LASPARK’s Public Relations Manager, Mr Sanusi Olajide, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the pruning of trees in strategic places in the metropolis was also ongoing.
According to him, the Agency is inundated with calls from residents to remove trees uprooted by the last rainfall in Lagos. “The last rainfall in March came with storm that uprooted many trees around Lagos.
“As we speak, there are still more than 20 calls from members of the public for the Agency to come and remove uprooted trees yet to be attended to. “The department responsible for removal of trees has been working round the clock to ensure that such trees are removed before they become major obstacles,” he said.
Olajide said that the pruning of trees within the metropolis was being carried out in batches. He said that trees around Alimosho Local Government Area and its environs as well as five Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas had been pruned.
Olajide said that it was expected that by June the pruning team would have pruned trees around Lagos. The official said that its staff had been up and doing in the maintenance and provision of security in the Parks and Gardens. He told NAN that the agency was still battling with the activities of miscreants and street urchins at few of the parks.
Olajide said that the outfit would soon come out with new strategy to secure those parks and rid them of miscreants’ activities. He said that monitoring and supervising pruning and felling of trees within the state was one of its major responsibilities.
According to him, felling and pruning of trees without permission from LASPARK was an offence that attracts penalties from the organisation.
The LASPARK spokesman said that the agency had tree-transplanting machines for moving matured trees from their present location to a new place. (NAN)
