Lagos State Govt Commissions Awolowo’s Statue.

Lagos state government unveiled the statue of late Chief
Obafemi Awolowo along Agidingbi roundabout in the Ikeja area
of the state capital .
The brief occasion was graced by the wife of the vice president, Mrs Dolapo Osinbajo,
governor of Lagos state, Mr Akinwumi Ambode, his deputy, Dr Mrs
Oluranti Idiat Adebule, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos state
ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr Ashimi Jamiu Adewale
together with other prominent dignitaries and members of the late
Chief’s family .
In his speech, the governor, laid emphasis on the good works of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo
and why it is necessary for his image to be immortalised in the state . He noted
that the statue which was formerly at Allen junction was moved to
Agidingbi roundabout since it is nearer to the secretariat and
government officials coming from other states or countries can see it.
He also made mention of the fact that Lagos state recognises late
Awolowo and that is why his statue is being placed in one of the
central places so that it can serve as a tourist attraction
for tourists.
The secretary to the government,Mr Tunji Bello, who was also
present at the event read Awolowo’s biography and talked about the
contributions of the late chief to Nigeria and its government in his time.
The Lagos state ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture were also there
to entertain the guests present at the occasion with dancers in
different colourful attires and the local gong beaters were also by
their side to sing praises of the late sage and nationalist.
In unveiling and commissioning the statue which was the main purpose
of the event, the governor invited members of late Chief Awolowo’s family to cut the ribbon and gave
permission for the white cloth covering the statue to be gradually
removed. The statue which stood at twenty feet high was a great sight
to behold
