Kalu defected to APC to escape expulsion, says PPA

The Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA), Tuesday said that the former Governor of Abia state, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu’s  defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was prompted when he got wind of his imminent expulsion from PPA.
Kalu had last week announced his resignation from PPA and adoption of APC as his new political platform, saying that he acted in obedience to the calls from his supporters and well wishers.
But the chairman of PPA in Abia State, Chief Emeka Okafor faulted Kalu’s claims at a press conference in Umuahia, saying that the party was on the verge of announcing Kalu’s expulsion over his anti-party activities only for him to make an emergence landing at APC to escape disgrace.

“Kalu’s movement to APC is an afterthought because he has seen the signals that we wanted to sack him because of his anti- party activities,” he said.

According to Chief Okafor, “In 2015 he (Kalu) was moving about campaigning for ex- President Goodluck Jonathan, and at the same time for PPA. He was moving about with two buses, one for PDP and one for PPA claiming he is the only man that belonged to two parties at the same time”.

Kalu was the founder of PPA and has used the party platform to contest the presidency in 2007 and subsequently Abia North senatorial seat without success. After his misadventure in presidential election Kalu had abandoned PPA and moved back to PDP and again to PPA and now to APC.

Chief Okafor likened Kalu’s frequent change of party membership to an unstable element in a chemical reaction, noting that he had brought misfortune to PPA of late because of his divided loyalty and lack of commitment to the progress of the party.
