INEC deploys 2 RECs to Kwara, Kebbi states

…To conduct 6 bye-elections before Sept 23 Osun Guber poll
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday deployed Mr. Garba Attahiru Madami, and Barrister Ahmad Bello Mahmud to Kwara and Kebbi states respectively after they took oath of office and allegiance as Resident Electoral Commissioners.

The two new commissioners were given immediate practical responsibilities of conducting the Lokoja/ Koton Large Federal Constituency and Katsina North Senatorial District bye- elections, respectively on Saturday August 11, 2018.

Chairman of the commission, Prof Mahmood Yakubu who disclosed this while swearing-in the commissioners at INEC headquarters in Abuja said the commission will also on the same day conduct 2 state assembly bye-elections in Cross River State while it will conduct elections to fill the vacant seats in Port Harcourt II State Constituency of Rivers State House of Assembly and Takum I State Constituency of Taraba State House of Assembly on August 18, 2018.

He said as at close of nominationonx Tuesday, 48 political parties have nominates candidates for the September 22 governorship election in Osun State.

Prof Yakubu charged the new RECs to be open, transparent and non-partisan in the discharge of their responsibilities but to be firm, courageous and interact with stakeholders and staff

“You must quickly familiarise yourselves with the relevant provisions if the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2010 (as ended), the Commission’s plans, guidelines and regulations as well as established processes and procedures”, he advised them.

A national commissioner of INEC, Barrister Festus Okoye was earlier in the day sworn-in by President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House.

“With these appointments, we now have the full complement of 12 National Commissioners and all but two Resident Electoral Commissioners”, said the chairman.
