Indonesia Apologises To Nigeria For Maltreating Diplomat

The Indonesian government has apologized to Nigeria over the mistreatment of a Nigerian embassy employee by immigration officers.

When the Indonesian Ambassador to Nigeria, Usra Hendra Harahap, was summoned by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyema, he apologized.

“The Ambassador explained what he understood happened and apologised unreservedly on behalf of the Government of Indonesia,” the Ministry said in a statement.

The Ambassador “has confirmed that the immigration authorities involved have since came to the Nigerian Embassy to apologise to the Ambassador and the diplomat involved,” according to the statement.

The Ministry also stated that the US government had filed a “strong complaint” to the Asian country, claiming that the occurrence was “in violation of international law and the Vienna Conventions governing Diplomatic and Consular Relations between States.”

A video circulating on social media depicted three males wrestling a black man into the interior of a car and pinning his neck to the car seat.

While his handlers kept the pressure on, the man could be heard shouting, “My neck, I can’t breathe.”

The Ministry acknowledged in a statement that the event occurred on August 7, 2021, at a Nigerian Diplomat’s official quarters in Jakarta.
