Heritage Bank capitalises on huge mobile banking market

SOME say life was simpler before mobile phones took over our every waking moment.
If you’ve got a smart phone there’s a good chance the last thing you see before you go to bed at night and when you wake up in the morning is the glow of your mobile device.
But you can’t stop progress and if you’re able to stop scrolling through Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram or Tinder for one second, you’ll notice that Nigerians love their phones.
A report issued by a European consultancy group (KPMG) found that in a country of about 180 million people, there were about 148 million mobile phone subscriptions in Nigeria.
And although the network isn’t always great, about 92 million of those 148 million subscribers could use the internet through their devices.
But while the rest of the world has taken massive strides in the online banking world, Nigerians have so far remained cautious about jumping into the future of banking.
According to KPMG only about 40% of Nigerians who hold bank accounts use the online banking systems provided by their banks.
It’s understood that Nigerians main concern about online banking was security and the potential for fraud.
Although this is a legitimate worry, banks understand this and have 24/7 cyber security teams handling any threats that may come your way.
Because of this concern it’s believed that about a third of all banking customers admitted to using mobile banking.
Once again this it at odds with the rest of the world, in countries like the U.S, England and Australia bricks and mortar branches are becoming a thing of the past because you customer can conduct all of their banking needs through their phones.
The author of the KPMG report suggested that Nigerian banks needed to make educating customers about mobile banking a “priority”.
Even though you might think Nigerian banks were locked in fierce battle against each to create the best mobile banking platform, there really is only one bank that is ahead of the pack.
In a concerted push to leap into the digital world Heritage Bank has showed that it understands how important mobile banking is, with the release of its latest upgrade to its mobile banking app.
It’s not surprising that customers have given Heritage Bank’s app a big thumbs up, rating it 4.1 on Google Play, with the addition of tighter security measures and features that make banking safer, easier and more convenient.
