Group accuses Shettima’s opponents of campaign of calumny

Political opponents of Senator Kashim Shettima within the All Progressives Congress (APC) have been accused of waging a campaign of calumny and mischief against the former goveenor of Borno state.

The APC chieftains who are still aggrieved with the outcome of the 2019 governorship election in Borno state, have regrouped ahead of the 2023 general elections with the sole aim of tarnishing the image of Sen. Shettima and shrinking his political influence.
President, Coalition of Civil Societies and Media Executives for Good Governance in Nigeria (COCMEGG), Comrade Omoba Aigbegbele raised the alarm in a statement he issued on Thursday  in Abuja.
Aigbegbele alleged that already, the APC chieftains have planted an allegation in the social media, putting the net worth of Sen. Shettima at $900 million in cash and have opened a fake Wikipedia page on the ex-governor to support their false narrative.
“Since December, 2019, a group of seven chieftains of the APC in Borno state, five of whom are former public office holders and two still in public service, have been making frantic efforts former Gov. Kashim Shettima.
“Their main grievance is the outcome of the 2019 governorship election in Borno state and their objective is the 2023 polls.
“These APC chieftains have been shopping for civil societies they can recruit into their evil mission. The group has recruited a pseudo -civil society platform, North-East Vanguard Against Corruption and Bad Governance to wage a vicious media campaign against the former Governor and the current administration in Borno state.
“Their major aim is to have Shettima humiliated either by the anti-graft agencies or by losing at the polls in 2023 should he seek re-election for the Borno Central Senatorial seat which he now occupies.
“As  part of their mission, the chieftains recently planted through one of their associates, a mischievous narrative on Twitter, that former Shettima is claiming to be worth $900 million which is equivalent to nearly N400 billion.
“This outrageous claim means that Shettima is now worth more than the combined federal allocated revenue and internally generated revenue generated by the previous administration when Shettima was governor of Borno,” the coalition said.
Aigbegbele called on Borno citizensto watch out for more vicious attacks on Seen. Shettima by the desperate politicians who do not mean well for the state, but see politics as a game of vendetta.
