Gas Explosion Kills SWAN Vice-President, Family

The National Vice-President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria South-South Zone, Eddie Bekon, is dead.

Nigeria Sports body has been thrown into a state of mourning.

The National Vice-President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria South-South Zone, Eddie Bekon, has passed on.

Eddie has been battling for his life for the past three weeks in the intensive care unit of the Federal Teaching hospital Abakaliki Ebonyi State.

He was involved in a gas explosion alongside his wife, two children and neighbours in whose house the explosion ignited.

His wife and kid had died few days after the incident but Eddie died on Sunday following severe burns sustained from the explosion.

Ebonyi State Chairman of SWAN, Comrade Chukwuemeka Opara, said that Eddie died as a result of a Gas explosion which occurred at his home in Ikom Cross River State three weeks ago.

Opara said that the “Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Ebonyi Chapter joins other chapters across the nation to mourn its departed National Vice President, South-South zone Eddie Bekom, who passed-on at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki on Sunday, July 16, 2017.”

He disclosed that the family has been under intensive Care Unit at the hospital since they were admitted, stating that the explosion claimed the lives of Eddie’s wife and one of his children while his other children were also affected by the inferno.

Ace Sport Journalist and former SWAN executive, Godwin Enakhena also confirmed the news on his Facebook page.

It read, “The worse happened a few hours ago when Eddie lost the ultimate battle he’s fought so well, the pains were too much and he passed.

“I still remember what Eddie said to me in what has turned out to be our last conversation.

“Please, salute all members of sport writes for me. Tell them I will survive this ordeal. I won’t lose the battle”.

“Poor Eddie, the hospital did all it could to keep the death of his wife and kid from him. We can’t hide it anymore for he has gone to join them in the God’s bosom.”
