Former OAU VC allegedly renovates residence with N208m
A former Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Prof. Bamitale Omole, allegedly renovated an official residence at house 14, Road 23, OAU Ile-Ife, with N208,931,972.58k.
The allegation was contained in a petition by a Non-Governmental Organisation, Third Eye Transparency International, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Chapter.
The petition which was obtained by our correspondent on Tuesday, was used to drag the immediate pat Vice-Chancellor of the OAU before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The petition, which was addressed to the Zonal Head of the anti graft agency, also contained allegation of embezzlement, fraudulent conversion, abuse of office and stealing of public funds.
In the petition, the anti-corruption group wanted the EFCC to beam its searchlight on the illegal disbursement and embezzlement of funds where Omole was alleged to have gotten and used the sum on the renovation of the official residence of the Vice-Chancellor,
The group alleged that the said official residence had been built and completed for decent habitation long before the tenure of Professor Omole and had also been occupied by several Vice-Chancellor.
Part of the allegations included the illegal disbursements of funds remitted to the OAU under the NEEDS Assessment of Nigerian Public Universities special Presidential Intervention.
The group accuse Omole of illegally depositing into fixed deposit accounts with the First Bank of Nigeria and Zenith Bank Plc the intervention fund without accounting for the earned and/or accrued interests.
It was gathered that Omole has been invited for interview by the EFCC in a letter dated 19th January, 2017 and addressed to the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Professor Anthony Elujobam
In the letter, the EFCC requested the Acting Vice-Chancellor to release Professor Bamitale Omole and the Bursar, Mrs Aderonke Akeredolu for an “interview”.
The EFCC also asked the University Bursar to come along with Certified True Copies (CTC) of “all capital project contracts, including financial document relevant to the renovation of Official Residence of the Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University executed in the institution”.
Other documents expected from the Bursar include “all financial document of funds remitted to the Obafemi Awolowo University under the NEEDS ASSESSMENT of Nigeria Public Universities Special Presidential Intervention between 2013 and 2014 and all financial documents of employer Contributory Pension Scheme of the Institution between 2012 and 2016.
