Flood kills JSS111 student in Delta

Flood waters following heavy rainfall on Thursday in Asaba, Delta state has killed a girl on her way home from school.

An eyewitness, Joan Osakwe said the victim identified as Chiwendu Rosemary fell into the rushing flood waters around Redeem Church area of Okpanam community while returning home from school and was swept away by the flood water before rescue efforts could save her.

She stated the corpse of the school girl was later recovered by the Kabana Hotel junction.

But, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Onovuwakpoyeya Onome, who confirmed the incident said the victim died on the spot after she fell into the flood waters.

“The victim, a JSS 111 student was on her way home after her examination when she fell into the deep flood waters and was swept through Redeem Church on Okpanam Road to Kabana Hotel junction where she died,” Onovuwakpoyeya said

Investigations revealed that Okpanam Road and its environs have been facing serious erosion menace with several houses and vehicles destroyed since the coming of the rains in the last few weeks.

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa sympathising with the family of the victim, assured that urgent solution to the erosion and flood menace in the state would be a thing of the past as the ongoing drainage projects when completed would address the problem.
