FG to set up cattle breeding centres across six geopolitical zones, says Abdullahi

The federal government says it will establish cattle breeding centres in each of the six geopolitical zones as part of efforts to boost productivity and resolve lingering farmers-herders conflicts.

Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, minister of state for agriculture and food security, disclosed this on the second day of the citizens-government engagement and midterm assessment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, organised by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Foundation in Kaduna.

Abdullahi said the initiative is part of the government’s broader plan to transform the livestock sector under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“The synergy and collaboration of the Ministries of Agriculture, Environment, Water Resources, Livestock Development, and the Marine and Blue Economy are imperative for delivering on the Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said.

Attahiru Jega, co-chairman of the Presidential Committee on Livestock Reforms, also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to livestock sector reforms. He said the reforms are designed to tackle long-standing clashes between farmers and herders, while unlocking the economic potential of the industry.

He said the newly created Ministry of Livestock Development is central to the president’s blueprint for transforming the sector.

“The implementation of the President’s vision is being carried out devoid of political considerations and, anchored on inclusive stakeholder engagement, encompassing state governments, traditional rulers, pastoral communities, and other critical actors,” Jega said.

“This initiative aims to equip the next generation with modern agricultural skills, technology-driven knowledge, and innovative farming practices to strengthen national food security.”

He reiterated the administration’s commitment to investing in livestock as a key economic driver.

According to him, the newly established Ministry of Livestock Development plans to set up breeding centres in each of the six geopolitical zones to enhance productivity and sustainability.
