Federal pensioners protest in Ogun over 14months unpaid pension

Federal pensioners under the contributory pensions scheme in Ogun state on Tuesday cried out to the government to pay their unpaid 14-month gratuities and pension.
The pensioners are those who retired from Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), Neuropsychiatric hospital as well as other federal agencies and establishments.
They also accused the government of not paying desired and deserved attention to their welfare and called on labour movement and government at all levels to set a day or a week for pensioners.
Addressing a joint press conference at the state secretariat of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Iwe-Iroyin, Abeokuta, through its national president, Mr. Kayode da-Silva, pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari to declare state of emergency on the situation.
He lamented that the contributory pension scheme stipulated that their gratuities should be paid three months after their retirement but the reverse is the case.
Da-silva said both Federal government and National Pension Commission has offered credible and satisfactory reasons for the protracted delay.
“Only God knows how many of the pensioners have died on account of this undue and deserved delay. A number of us suffer from age related ailments and must be on drug daily.
“How do we take care of our health, when the gratuity and pension are not paid.”
He said it was sad to confirm that workers who retired under the contributory pension scheme are being owed 14 months pension thereby resulting to the deaths of many of them.
He therefore appealed to the Federal government to urgently interfere in the plight and direct PENCOM to settled them.
