Electricity consumers have lashed out at reports of a proposal by power distribution companies to raise the average energy charge to N105 per kilowatt-hour from the current rate of 22.8KWH is approved. Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Some Nigerians have described minister of power, works and housing, Babatunde Fashola as a round peg in a square hole. The fresh increase if implemented will see electricity tariff being paid by consumers increase over 200 per cent, less than eight months after about 45 per cent increase in tariff was imposed on electricity consumers nationwide.

Nigeria’s power generation reduces to 3,531 megawatts The power firms attributed the proposed increase to high inflation rate in the country, scarcity of foreign exchange, devaluation of the naira and the huge debts being owed them. Already, the Discos said they had hinted the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission about the proposal but no action had been taken on it yet. But the news of the proposed increase in electricity tariff has angered Nigerians who have called on the minister of power, works and housing, Babatunde Fashola to resign.

Somebody somewhere nominated me as VP – Osinbajo The angry consumers described news on the proposed increase as ill-timed considering the current economic recession. Others called for a revolt against the politician for failing to fulfill most of their campaign promises.
