Emir calls for improve performance by telecom service providers

The Emir of Minna in Niger State, Dr. Umar Farouk Bahago on Thursday called for improved performance on the part of mobile communications service providers in the country.

Bahago said “at the moment, subscribers to all the networks were not getting adequate reward for the value of their monies”.

Speaking through a National Officer of the Nigeria Union of Journalists ( NUJ) who is also the ‘Tambari Minna’‎, Alhaji Mohammed Ismaila She, the traditional ruler said the service providers should give back to their customers part of what they have received.

He noted some lapses in the operations of the service providers, especially the unsolicited calls and SMS from call centres of service providers and asked for a stop to put to these anomalies.

While commending the service providers for providing good communication for the country, Bahago however suggested that in view of the prevailing situation in the country they (service providers) should consider bringing down the tariff.

Earlier, the Director, Consumer Affairs Bureau, Nigerian Communications Commission, Alhaji Abdullahi Maikano said the 76th edition of consumer outreach programme with the theme ‘Information and Education as a catalyst for consumer protection’ was designed to address the problems faced by subscribers with their service providers.

Represented by the Deputy Director Consumer Affairs, Dr. Joseph Atoyebi, Maikano said a lot of mechanism have been put in place to correct service providers that were illegally exploiting the subscribers.

“Consumer education is identified by the commission as one of the most effective mechanism that provides and guarantees consumer protection”.

“To ensure that the consumer is well protected, educated and informed, the NCC has developed series of initiatives with the main goal of empowering consumers with appropriate information that will ensure their rights are not only protected but their choices provide them with value for money.”

Scores of subscribers that attended the programme, complained that they were being short-changed by the service providers.
