The commander National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Kano Command, Hamza Umar MNI, has decried the new trend of drug abuse among minors in the state as something new and unexpected.
Hamza, who spoke to newsmen at the commands headquarters on Tuesday, stated that the ugly trend which the state has been dealing with for decades in now recorded among minors as young as seven years old.
“We have been fighting the issue of drug abuse among youths, and adult then behold our children are now been initiated. One would find it difficult to believe that these things are really happening unless one sees for himself.”
The Commander who blamed the rise in drug abuse on unemployment and get rich quick syndrome said that more needs to be done on the part of government and stake holders in order to curb the menace.
That lack of adequate operational vehicles and limited number of divisional offices in the state which are only 5 at the moment are some of the factors causing hindrances to the command’s smooth operation. But that the command would not relent in its fight against the old practice and would make good use of the new two Hilux vans given to the command by the state government.
He urged community leaders, religious leaders traditional leaders, civil societies and every agents of government to join in the fight against drug abuse in the society in order to have a responsible society free of social vices as it has been established that drug abuse leads virtually to all forms of social vices in the society.
Among items confiscated by the command in recent times are cannabis, cocaine, cough syrups such as codine and tramadol worth of millions of Naira. Also seized vehicles used in transporting such hard drugs are all kept under the command’s watch.
