Don canvasses proper planning before setting up private varsities

Prof. Abdul-Lateef Oladimeji, former National Social Secretary of the University of Ilorin Alumni Association, has stressed the need for proper planning and strategic studies by those wishing to establish private universities in Nigeria.

Oladimeji, who made the recommendation while speaking with newsmen in Ilorin, said that experience had shown that many people planning to establish private universities often crashed midway due to lack of focus and proper planning.

“There is the need for enlightenment and proper education as to the needs and criteria for the establishment of a university,” he added.

The don stated that there are many faith-based universities in Nigeria and there are plans for the establishment of more private universities.

He noted that there are criteria for the establishment of private universities highlighted by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

According to him, these include application in writing, stating the intent for the establishment of the university, interview of promoters to ascertain the seriousness and collection of application form, among other requirements.

He described it as an enormous task for individuals and faith-based organisations to attain.

Oladimeji also said that there are various challenges facing the already established private universities, which include attracting quality staff, enrollment of students and adequate funding
