Despair and chaos in Norway TV studio as San Marino score away goal

The minnows ranked the 201st best team in the world came close to pulling off an upset in Oslo with a very rare goal causing drama for the host nation

San Marino caused chaos in a Norwegian television studio after scoring their first away goal in 15 years as they lost 4-1 to Norway in World Cup qualifying on Tuesday.

The minnows ranked 201st in the world came close to pulling off a huge shock when Mattia Stefanelli fired home their first away goal since 2001 in the 54th minute to level the scores in Oslo.

San Marino then remarkably kept the tie at 1-1 for another 23 minutes until Adama Diomande restored some Norwegian pride by putting the hosts back in front.

Stefanelli’s strike was celebrated wildly by the nation on Twitter while Norwegian television pundits were stunned into silence, and then darkness as the lights in the studio temporarily went out.

Goals from Samuelsen and King ensured Norway eventually ran out comfortable 4-1 winners but it was a night that will not be forgotten in San Marino for some time.
