Delta NLC demands decent jobs for workers, pickets companies

The Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Delta State, Comrade Jonathan Jemiriyiegbe, has called on employers of Labour in both public and private sectors to provide decent work place for their workers in order to ensure higher efficiency and improved healthy life.

Speaking at a rally mark the 10th anniversary of World Day for Decent Work rally in Asaba, at the weekend by affiliate unions under NLC, Comrade Jemiriyiegbe, who decried the poor and indecent work environment in which most workers operate in Nigeria, said the Nigeria workers have been subjected to all kinds of treatment by their employers, mostly from the private sector and called for a stop to that.

While warning that the NLC will no longer accept such indecent and ill-treatment of workers, where they (workers) lack the required working tools, decent environment, poor salaries and casualization, the Delta NLC Boss urged employers of labour to wake up to their responsibilities and ensured that their employees were given decent treatment and decent wage, which will further improve their efficiency and output.

Also speaking at the rally, the Deputy General Secretary, National Union of Chemical, Footwear, Rubber Leather and Non-metallic Products Employees, Comrade Austine Ekanem said October 6th every year was declared by the UN for global campaign for decent work and called on workers to unit to liberate oppressed Nigeria workers to enjoy decent work in their various organizations.

“As a union, we must unite our colleagues facing difficult challenges in their work environment, we must campaign against such indecency, economic situation will not deter us from this campaign because the condition in which most workers operate in Nigeria is very pathetic and we need to do something,” he said.

The rally which kicked off at Labour House, Asaba at 10am, ended at 2:30pm at Summit Junction, with the representatives of the various unions, including Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) and Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU), among others displaying placards of various inscription: ‘Join Union to Achieve Decent Work’, ‘Nigerian workers Say No To Contract Worker’, ‘Nigeria Workers Demand Decent Work and Pay Rise.’

Meanwhile, in demonstration of its seriousness, the NLC at the weekend picked KDL/Wonderpack Industries Ltd, Asaba for alleged indecent work environment, with a call on the management to improve on its working environment and worker’s welfare.
