Dabiri-Erewa urges UK to strengthen its anti-money laundering laws
The Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Hon. Abike Dabiri- Erewa, has appealed to the British parliament to strengthen its anti-money laundering and banking laws to prevent Britain from being a safe haven for looters.
She made the appeal in a press statement signed by her Special Assistant on Media, Alhaji Abdur-Rahman Balogun in Abuja, on Wednesday.
The Presidential aide, according to the statement, made the appeal while delivering a paper as a guest speaker on “Partnerships and Engaging Nigerians in Diaspora’’ at the House of Commons in London.
Dabiri, a two-term member of the House of Representatives, urged Britain to adopt what she tagged the “unexplainable wealth policy”, which has been adopted by seven countries including France, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, which forfeits assets of foreigners and firms with questionable wealth.
According to her, “The person who receives stolen goods is just as guilty as the person who steals.
“We appeal to you to support our anti-corruption drive and make your banking system and your society uncomfortable for looters,” she said.
The SSA to the President reiterated that the war against corruption was central to President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
The President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration, Dabiri-Erewa pointed out, had made the welfare of Nigerians central to its programmes and policies, adding that the government was committed to creating an enabling environment both for Nigerians at home and in Diaspora.
